This blend of Grenache and Syrah (80/20) is common in the Occitanie region of Southwest France, a subset of the larger Languedoc-Rousillon region, where Grenache is seen as royalty for red wines and Roses as well.
The term "Old Vines" has no legal meaning in the wine world. Wich is a shame IMHO! Of all the minutia and ever-changing wine laws that govern the transition from grape to glass, this missing definition seems like a useful no-brainer!
But whatever defintion of "Old Vines" the wine world might eventually agree on, these gnarled old vines clinging to 'soils' that resemble rows of rock more than actual soil, they would definitely qualify!
We recently featured the red wines of Southern France at one of our weekly tastings and some 50+ attendees fell in love with the wines... and their value! This wine shows why: concentrated black fruits, a hint of raspberries, black pepper and wild herbs (Garrigue galore!), with leather and spice notes that will remind you of Châteauneuf-du-Pape at a fraction of the price.
