St Estephe is located on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, but it's farther North than the region known for gravelly soils (Grave, specifically). Instead, St Estephe has soils of clay and limestone that give a home to later-ripening grapes with higher acid structures. These wines are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as are most Left Bank wines, and though they're age-worthy their finesse argues for near-term enjoyabiiity as well.
Though Ch Commanderie holds its own on the world stage, it's primary claim to fame is one of value for the money, leaving the limelight to the five producers that broke through the Crus Bourgeois classification:
