The Wine
A full liter of crisp, refreshing rosé! The wine is medium-to-pale, which may seem a bit surprising given the St Laurent grape is notable for being dark-skinned. The vineyard is sustainably dry-farmed without pesticides or herbicides.
The grape is delightfully aromatic and dark-skinned, with mysterious parentage - half Pinot Noir, half unknown, despite the efforts of modern DNA research. A grape of easy virtue, one supposes. "That Pinot Noir (shakes head), such a hussy!"
PRONUNCIATION - St Laurent: In German, the St (Saint) is spelled "Sankt" so it sounds like the word "sanked" but with a t at the end. That's the easy part. Now for the second word - Laurent.
Ever notice how those who speak with a Southern drawl can make a two-syllable word into three syllables? It's sort of the same with 'Laurent'. The first syllable sounds like "Lau" (but drawn out to lah-OOH), and then "rent" with a soft "t". Say Lah-OOH-rent and you're pretty much there. By jove, I think we've got it!
The Winery
The half-timber home of this family-owned estate in Hainfeld was built in 1619, but the estate in its current form is far more modern - the result of the 1990 wedding of Annette Borell and Thomas Diehl that combined their families' three wineries.
Starting with a total of 12 acres, they now farm 86 acres of vineyards, all within about 30 minutes from Deidesheim. Their holdings are a complex geology of loess, limestone, red sandstone, with deposits of minerally muschelkalk (limestone, or literally 'Mussel Chalk') in some sites.
The estate is now transitioning to oldest son, George. In the great old world tradition of learning the family craft under the tutelage of others, George worked at such notable German wineries as Rebholz (Pfalz) Wittmann (Rheinhessen), and Von Volxem (Saar), as well as an internship in New Zealand in 2016.
He plans tocontinue the winery's focus on quality wines at exceptional prices. As with most of the wines we carry, this wine is from estate-owned vineyards where rigorous crop thinning and hand-harvesting are the norm and pesticides / herbicides / irrigation are rarely used. As of 2018, the wines are certified vegan by the European Vegetarian Union, meaning no animal products were used to fine the wines.
