This wine comes from the northeastern part of Italy, near the boundary with Austria. It is a region that once considered itself Austrian until the edict during WWII that they become Italian or move back to Austria. Some chose allegiance to their country and culture over homes and possessions.
With such a history, it's not surprising that the local street sgns, menus, hotel notices - practically everything printed - is in both Italian and German. Take, for example, the label of this wine, which lists the grape as Vernatsch - Schiava. This is the same grape in two different languages:
Vernatsch (German) - vurh NOTCH
Schiava (Italian) - skee AH vuh
A rose by any other name... This grape is behind some of the world's best "chillable reds", as it delivers high-toned red fruit notes with good mouth-watering acidity that befs for a good food pairing. And the good news? It pairs with a wide, wide range of international dishes.
