The Wine

The landmark wine from a producer who was key to using native grapes like this one -  Agiorgitiko (EYE your GEE tee koh). The wine begins with its almost black color, leading to rich aromas of black cherries, vanilla, and mocha. On the palate the wine is full-bodied with sufficient tannins to suggest pairing with fatty dishes.

The undergoes 12 months of aging in French oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle.

The Winery

Palivou Estate is a family-owned winery in Nemea (Peloponnese), a region of Greece whose grape growing history dates back 3,500 years.

The winery was established far more recently (1995) by George and Aggeliki Palivos. They became key figures in revitalizing the Nemea appellation. During a time when the old world was turning to "International Varietals" in an effort to produce wines that were more familiar in flavor profile to those loved by the American market, Palivou focused instead on the indigenous grape variety Agiorgitiko (EYE your GEE tee koh).

Today, their daughters, Evangelia and Vasiliki, continue the family's winemaking tradition, pursuing biodynamic practices in their ~125 acres of high-elevation vineyards (1,200 - 2,600 feet above sea level).

One of the unique features the winery makes available to visitors is the Palivou Wine Train, a restored vintage train carriage now called into service atop their vineyard, providing a memorable spot for wine tastings (as the seasons allow) whit unbeatable views (images).
