The Wine

Le Volte dell’Ornellaia 2023 is one of those wines that reinforces our general advice to seek the “second wine” of a great estate. As with the general rule for such wines, this one is approachable, polished, and unmistakably true to the Ornellaia style but without the grandeur (or price) of the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia's flagship bottlings.

A blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet grown within spitting distance of the Mediterranean, the wine shows an appealing salinity and an elegance from its sandy/clay/limestone soils. An everyday luxury!

Pairings: Pasta with ragu of pork or beef, grilled sausages, veggies roasted with a hint of rosemary, aged pecorino or similar hard sheep's cheeses, pizza with fennel sausage (Finnociona) 

The Winery

Founded in 1981 near Bolgheri, Ornellaia has become iconic producer of wines known as Super Tuscan. When the winery was founded, the regulations surrounding the production of Chianti were designed to overcome the weaknesses of the Sangiovese grapes grown back then - grapes grown by century-old traditions before modern DNA science identified today's great strains of Sangiovese. There are many dozens of them, aferall!

While the estate is known for its grand cuvées (Ornellaia and Masseto), Le Volte showcases the same precision and vineyard care in a more relaxed, ready-to-enjoy style.
