Renzo Castella 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo "Madonnina"
Renzo Castella 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo "Madonnina"
The Wine
A graceful, approachable expression of Nebbiolo from Piedmont’s Langhe hills, this is the affordable sibling made from the same grape behind its great siblings, the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco.
Aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries, and raspberries, with delicate notes of rose petals, violets, and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and elegant, with lively acidity and fine, chalky tannins that give structure without heaviness.
The fruit is pure and precise, supported by subtle earthy undertones and a mineral edge that reflects the hillside vineyards. The finish is long and fresh, making it a versatile wine for pairing with traditional Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin pasta, braised veal, or aged cheeses. It is accessible in youth but has the balance to develop further nuance with short-term cellaring.
The Winery
Renzo Castella, is a family-run estate rooted in Piedmont’s Langhe region, dedicated to cultivating Nebbiolo and other local varieties with respect for tradition and terroir. The “Madonnina” bottling comes from select hillside vineyards where Nebbiolo thrives in calcareous clay soils under a continental climate moderated by alpine breezes.
Castella’s philosophy emphasizes hands-on vineyard management, manual harvests, and restrained winemaking so the purity and elegance of Nebbiolo takes the limelight. Fermentation and aging preserve the wine's freshness and varietal character through a judicious use of oak only to add a subtle complexity without overshadowing the fruit. The estate’s wines are known for their authenticity, balance, and accessibility, offering a clear reflection of the Langhe’s unique terroir
