The Wine
The wine opens with typical Aglianico gravitas and swagger - dark cherry, black plum, and a flutter of wild herbs. The palate delivers firm but polished tannins, a core of brooding black fruit, and a savory undertow of tobacco leaf, iron, and dried rose. As the wine opens it delivers a gentle warmth and a hint of cocoa, giving the wine a sense of depth without heaviness. The finish is long, mineral-laden, and slightly ferrous, a reminder this Aglianico is rooted in some seriously volcanic soils.
Pairings: A big wine that loves full-flavored dishes like braised/grilled meets, hearty dishes from Southern Italy, France or Spain, and earthy/smoky flavors. Cheese pairings will feature aged cheeses such as Pecorino or Asiago.
The Winery
Donna Chiara is a family estate in the hills of Montefredane, where the Chiaromonte family has been tending vines for generations. The modern winery was founded by Chiara Petitto to honor her grandmother (also named Chiara) whose devotion to the land shaped the family’s identity. Today the estate is known for its meticulous work with Campania’s noble trio - Fiano, Greco, and Aglianico.
Their vineyards sit on volcanic and clay‑limestone soils at elevation, giving their wines both structure and aromatic lift. In the cellar, the approach is classic and restrained, as are most of the wines selected for our portfolio. They feature spontaneous fermentations, judicious use of oak, and an emphasis on purity of fruit.
The Campi Taurasini bottling represents their bridge between approachable Aglianico and the more monumental Taurasi. This wine is still serious and expressive and unmistakably Irpinian, yet it is ready to drink now.
