Lucidity Wine Merchants
The Wine
A classic expression of Valtellina fruit, a Nebbiolo very different from those found in Barolo or Barbaresco. This high-altitude (Swiss Alps) version is shaped by its origins - steep, terraced vineyards and long, traditional aging prior to release.
Tasting Notes: Translucent in the glass, with a pale garnet color, aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, alpine herb and a gentle hint of tobacco. On the palate it is taut and linear, with bright acidity, fine dusty tannins and a savory, mineral finish. The non‑vintage designation simply signals Balgera’s old‑school approach, blending small lots to achieve a consistent, classically alpine profile.
Pairings: Mushroom dishes, especially porcini risotto or polenta with sautéed chanterelles. Roast poultry with thyme, or simple pork loin with fennel. For cheeses, alpine styles are the natural match: aged Fontina, Gruyère, Comté, or goat tomme.
The Winery
The Balgera family has been making wine in Valtellina since the late nineteenth century, and their style remains reflects that multi-generational tradition (though not without inter-generational differences over the adoption of anything new!)
They work primarily with Nebbiolo (called Chiavennasca in the Valtellina) sourcing fruit from high, terraced vineyards carved into the valley’s steep granite walls. This is an example of "heroic vineyard management", as the terraces are too steep for any sort of machinery, and all maintenance and harvesting are done by hand in a vineyard so steep you dare not trip.
Balgera's style is defined by long macerations, slow aging in large neutral casks, and minimal intervention in the cellar. This wine is an idea introduction to that house style, offering a glimpse of Valtellina’s elegance without the weight or polish of more modern interpretations.
