The Wine
This is a wine that effortlessly walks the tightrope between exuberance and elegance. On the nose you'll find a sensory scrapbook: wildflowers pressed in old dusty books, sun-dried linen, and a slight hint of bergamot. Quince and citrus peel add a tart lift, while pear skin and fynbos honey lend a distinctly South African signature.
But it's on the palate where the wine really flexes — golden apple and pineapple coil around a core of brioche and salted butter, with a veil of ginger spice stitching it all together. There’s also a nuttiness that adds yet another layer of intrigue. And the acidity? Mouthwatering, like biting into a just-ripe Granny Smith apple.
It’s a wine that feels both curated and spontaneous — like someone who knows their way around a cellar but still dances barefoot in the vineyard. This wine does a happy dance when paired with grilled seafood, curry, or a wedge of aged goat cheese.
The Winery
Nestled in the Paarl Valley beneath the dramatic Klein Drakenstein mountains, Brookdale Estate is a South African winery that blends old-world charm with modern innovation. Once a forgotten vineyard, the estate was revitalized by the Rudd family in 2015 with a vision to craft world-class wines from both classic and lesser-known varietals. Today, Brookdale is celebrated for its terroir-driven Chenin Blancs — including a standout block of certified old vines from 1985 — and its adventurous field blends that showcase the region’s unique soils and climate.
Beyond the cellar, Brookdale offers a full sensory experience. The elegant Manor House, inspired by Cape Dutch architecture, overlooks wild fynbos (home to over 9000 plant species, 90% of which are found nowhere else) and dipping valleys, while the estate’s Bistro and Tasting Room serve up soulful dishes paired with expressive wines.
Winemaker Kiara Scott and proprietor Tim Rudd lead the charge with a philosophy rooted in curiosity, sustainability, and a deep respect for South Africa’s winemaking heritage. It’s a place where imagination meets precision — and where each bottle tells a story of revival and possibility.
