The Wine

Roero is one of the delightful-but-rare white wines from Piemonte, a land where red grapes swan about, stealing all the limelight. Most Roero toils away, barely appreciated and occupying the no man's land of middle-priced white wines ($20 - $30).

But there's always that one guy...

Except, in this case, that one guy is a woman - Bruna Giacosa! She's the one who has furthered her family's reputation for rescuing Arneis from obscurity, taking this under-appreciated white grape of Piemonte and lifting it to new heights. If you wonder why any sane wine lover would pay this much for a simple Arneis, I refer you to similar stories in other white wine regions - Dagueneau, Cuilleron, etc.

Bright straw-yellow in the glass, the wine's aromas remind us of a fresh and savory bouquet - there's some white peach, a little lemon oil, and hints of melon are topped by just the slightest hint of chive. Going back in for another sniff (and another!) brings complex floral notes - hints of acacia and orange blossom layer in with apricot and quince, while a subtle spice and stony minerality speak to Roero’s sandy soils. The palate is medium-bodied and polished. Crunchy Asian pear acidity hums along the edges, lifting the wine's notes of mango, lime, and honeysuckle.

Vinified entirely in stainless steel to preserve the wine's zippy, electric freshness and high-toned fruit purity. The finish lingers with citrus-driven brightness and a touch of salinity seasoned with white pepper and sweet fruit.

Pairings: Crudo/ceviche, vitello tonnato (a classic!), fresh cheeses (Chevre), and classic Piemontese antipasti. But this is a food friendly wine, whose clarity and texture make it a versatile companion to any dish featuring delicate flavors.

The Winery

Bruno Giacosa is a towering figure in the world of Piemontese wine, known for his extraordinary palate and reverence for terroir. He joined his family’s winery in the Langhe when he was only 15 years old, and over the decades he has become synonymous with the highest expressions of Barolo and Barbaresco. The Giacosa family’s legacy is one of precision and purity, and his deep knowledge of vineyard sites allowed him to craft wines of remarkable elegance and authenticity.

Notably, Giacosa was among the few winemakers credited with rescuing Arneis from near extinction in the 1960s, recognizing its potential and bottling it commercially. His estate, based in Neive, includes holdings across Barbaresco, Barolo, and Roero, each chosen for its unique expression of Piedmont’s diverse soils and microclimates.

Today, his daughter Bruna Giacosa carries forward the family’s philosophy, continuing to produce wines that honor tradition while embracing refinement. The Roero Arneis is a testament to their commitment to elegance, terroir, and the quiet power of a well-made white wine.
