Grape Expectations
The Wine
A firm, graphite‑lined Left Bank Bordeaux, this Pauillac offers cassis, cedar, and a pleasingly youthful, structured frame that will become even more alluring if allowed more years of cellar maturation.
The 2022 vintage was hot and extremely dry, producing small berries with thick skins — resulting in deep color, concentrated fruit, and powerful tannins, all balanced by the estate’s gravel soils that help retain nighttime coolness.
The cuvee is typical Left Bank, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, both sourced from gravelly parcels typical of northern Pauillac, playing secondary blending roles.
Pairings: Grilled ribeye or pepper‑rubbed tri‑tip with a firm, nutty cheese such as Comté or aged Gouda.
The Winery
A traditional Pauillac estate with deep roots in the northern Médoc, Château Haut de la Bécade farms gravel‑rich parcels that naturally favor Cabernet Sauvignon.
The property has long been known for a restrained, classical approach: hand‑tended vineyards, moderate yields, and élevage that emphasizes structure over showiness.
While not one of the commune’s headline names (their First-Growth neighbors include Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Latour, and Mouton Rothschild and their Second-Growth neighbors are Chateau Pichon Longueville), Becade has a reputation among Bordeaux insiders for producing honest, terroir‑driven Pauillac with the graphite, cassis, and firm tannic spine that define the appellation.
Recent vintages reflect a steady refinement in both vineyard management and cellar precision.
