The Wine

From a private collector, stored in his Bay Area basement, this is one of the most important estates in the world of fine wine. No current tasting notes are available for this rare wine from the 1985 vintage, but in those days of far cooler climate, these wines were known for longevity. As you can see from the photos, the fill level is impressively good (red arrow).

The wines of Lafite became synonymous with an identifiable style: notes of cedar and graphite in their youth, floral lift, finely woven tannins, and an ability to age with remarkable grace.

The 1985 vintage in Bordeaux was an absolute stand-out, a vintage of the decade. Most appellations, particularly the top estates, managed to produce brilliant reds that were both elegant and exquisitely balanced. Although some wines are likely to be past their best, there should still be a fine selection of reds, particularly from the top estates, that are still drinking well now although they are best enjoyed in the near-term.

As with all aged wines from private collectors, this wine is sold as-is with no possibility of return or refund.

California Retail Market (Current Listings)

Retail availability in California shows the wine offered around $899.99 per 750ml. This aligns with Wine‑Searcher’s statewide average of $1,154 per bottle (ex‑tax).

The Winery

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the top five of Bordeaux, a first growth estate. It is still family owned and stands as one of Bordeaux’s most enduring symbols of elegance. Its contemporary reputation has been shaped by centuries of meticulous viticulture and a winemaking style that honors its past.

The property has been under Rothschild family stewardship since 1868, and its gravelly hilltop vineyards—planted largely to Cabernet Sauvignon—have long produced wines known not for sheer power but rather their aromatic finesse, restraint, and longevity.

Today the estate is guided by Saskia de Rothschild, who brings a modern sensibility to a Domaine that still feels rooted in its past. The result is a First Growth that continues to express Pauillac with precision and quiet authority, offering wines that feel both timeless and unmistakably tied to the character of its land.
