D.V. Catena 2021 Tinto Historico (Mendoza, Argentina)
D.V. Catena 2021 Tinto Historico (Mendoza, Argentina)
The Wine
A deep, expressive red blend that pays tribute to the Catena family’s early winemaking traditions in Mendoza. Crafted from a blend of Malbec, Bonarda (aka Charbono), and Petit Verdot, it begins with vibrant and dense ruby color, then opens with aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, and cherries, layered with violets, tobacco, and baking spices.
This is a wine of generous body made more interesting by its subtle mineral streak on a long and persistent finish. If enjoyed now, you'll appreciate its freshness and charm. If you have the time and patience to wait a few years, you'll enjoy the bottle bouquet this wine develops, and it will age nicely for a good decade more.
Pairings: This versatile table wine plays well as a dinner companion for grilled meats, hearty stews, and aged cheeses.
The Winery
D.V. Catena is a project of the famed Catena Zapata family, one of Argentina’s most influential wine dynasties.
The initials stand "D.V." were lent by Domingo Vicente Catena, who began planting vineyards in Mendoza in the early 1900s and believed deeply in the potential of Argentine terroir.
Today, the estate is led by Nicolás Catena Zapata and his daughter Laura Catena, who have elevated Argentine wine to global recognition. The D.V. Catena line highlights historical blends and single-vineyard expressions, combining tradition with innovation. Vineyards are located at high altitudes in Mendoza, where intense sunlight and cool nights produce grapes of remarkable concentration and freshness. The philosophy is rooted in respect for heritage, meticulous vineyard management, and a pursuit of elegance and authenticity.
The Tinto Histórico 2021 embodies this vision: a wine that tips the hat to Argentina’s past while leveraging the contemporary techniques that define Catena Zapata today.
