The Wine
Wines from Sancerre have become so well known as a go-to white wine that many are surprised to learn the region also produces some delicious red wines like this one.
The area's Silex soils are what lend these wines their unique flavors and high status. In this case, the Silex soils are in Andre's vineyard next to the Charme forest, where he has flint soil with no limestone. The result is this wine with exotic, perfumed flavors and aromas.
Pairings: Herb-roasted chicken, duck confit with a light red fruit glaze, porchetta with roasted small potatoes, pork anything/anyway, and mushroom dishes. Cheese pairings include Crottin, Brie, Comte, Brillat Savarin.
The Winery
André Vatan took over the helm of his family’s vineyard when his father unexpectedly passed away in 1988. The winery has a collection of about 9 small buildings that have the appearance of a rural hamlet and which the neighbors lovingly call “Vatanville”.
It’s very neat and tidy, in keeping with André’s character - he is obsessive whit his attention to detail in all aspects of his life, not just his winemaking. From his clean, well-organized cellars to the stakes of his neatly aligned vineyards, everything is perfect.
There are four vineyards in the Vatan estate, all located around the winery and raised with carefully controlled yields, as André would have nothing else! André and his wife, Arielle, have worked tirelessly to create a highly respected winery with wines that have earned a good reputation and are now in high demand.
