Drappier is one of the Champagne region's family-run historic houses, founded in 1808 in the Aube region of Champagne. Drappier's cellars date back much farther, with first recorded evidence dating back to the 1100s, when they were used by the Cistercian abbey at Clairvaux.
Georges Drappier was the first in the Aub region to widely plant Pinot Noir, earning him the nickname “Père Pinot.” Today the entire region is known for its richer, Pinot-dominated Champagnes. Charles de Gaulle famously chose Drappier Champagne for state occasions, cementing its reputation as a top producer. Today's total production is about 133,000 cases, distributed globally.
Andre Drappier introduced the Carte d'Or Brut in the post WWII boom, and it remains the house's flagship wine around the world. The house has been led by Michel Drappier since 1979, the seventh generation of Drappier to run the business. His three kids are now involved in day-to-day operations and will represent the 8th generation to run this sizable Champagne House, producing
Still known for its Pinot Noir–dominant style (70% of their plantings), today they are equally well regarded for their eco-conscious practices (now carbon neutral) and innovative, low-sulfur wines. Drappier remains one of the most distinctive producers in Champagne today.
