The Wine

The wine is 100% Gamay (this IS Beaujolais, after all!), a grape that is enjoying a much-deserved moment in the spotlight after toiling through the 90's era of BIG IS BETTER red wines. Gamay can produce surprisingly serious, age-worthy wines (see the 10 Cru Beaujolais!) but they tend to be medium-bodied like this one.

Tasting Notes: Bright red fruit aromatics of strawberries, red cherries, violets and stony minerality.  Juicy and refreshing - a good food wine that refreshes the palate between bites and courses!

Parings: Charcuterie, roast chicken, and soft cheeses

The Winery

One of the region's oldest estates, Domaine Dupeuble was founded in 1512. The 240-acre estate is now run by siblings, Ghislaine and Stephane Dupeuble. As with most of the wines on our shelves, the Dupeubles are committed to sustainable viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking that allows the terroir to take the lead in their wines, and in this case, that means their wines show a distinctive granitic impression typical of their soils in Southern Beaujolais.

Their vineyard practices include "Lutte raisonee" (reasoned struggle) techniques such as natural composting, manual harvesting and no synthetic chemicals at any time of year, all with the focus of increasing biodiversity both on above and below the soil. In the cellar, it includes vinification with native yeasts and no SO2, filtration, added sugars or other chemical inputs.

Their practices have earned them the impressive/expensive/rigorous designation of HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification.
