The Wine
First, the story. Los Conejos Malditos translates as "the Damned Rabbits!" It was the name given to the wines from this troublesome vineyard, where rabbits insisted on dining upon the young shoots and grapes. And their appetites were voracious! The winemakers used this phrase to describe the little buggers - the only pest pressure on this organic vineyard - and the epithet became the label!
And now for the wine, which is so much more than a creative label. The wine is a bright, wild‑berry‑driven Tempranillo rosado with strawberry, rhubarb, citrus peel, and a crisp, refreshing finish. The high‑altitude vineyards (around 2,500 feet) help preserve acidity in the warm La Mancha climate, giving the wine lift and tension despite its ripe fruit.
The wine is 100% Tempranillo from organically farmed limestone‑and‑clay parcels. The short maceration period left the wine with a pale color and lighter body, also enhanced by the wine's cool, stainless‑steel fermentation.
Pairings: Tapas, grilled shrimp, summer salads or paella. A very friendly cheese wine, particularly with fresh goat cheese or young Manchego.
The Winery
Made by Más Que Vinos, a trio of winemakers (Alexandra Schmedes, Margarita Madrigal, and Gonzalo Rodríguez) who focus on organic farming and high‑altitude vineyards around Toledo. Their style emphasizes purity, freshness, and minimal intervention, with Los Conejos Malditos becoming one of their most recognizable, fruit‑forward, summer‑friendly bottlings.
