The Wine

Purchased by our importer directly from the producer in 2026, this is a traditional, long‑aged Rioja built from Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Mazuelo. According to the technical sheet, the wine spent 12 months in tank to complete malolactic fermentation and rest before spending 24 months in used American oak barrels.

At this age, the wine shows a mature garnet color with aromas of leather, tobacco, dried red fruit, and forest floor. The palate is smooth and evolved, offering gentle red fruit, spice, and earthy complexity with balanced acidity and a persistent, savory finish. The overall impression is elegant, traditional, and fully in line with Murrieta’s historic style.

Pairings: Mature Rioja pairs well with roasted meats, game, braises, and classic Spanish dishes. Its earthy, savory profile complements richer preparations. For cheese, a semi‑aged Manchego or a firm cow’s‑milk Tomme works well with its evolved red‑fruit and leather notes.

The Winery

Marqués de Murrieta is one of Rioja’s foundational estates, known for meticulous cellar work and long aging in American oak. The 1973 vintage showcases the estate’s commitment to structure, longevity, and classic Rioja character, offering a wine that has aged gracefully and remains a testament to Murrieta’s historic craftsmanship.
