Gian Luca Colombo 2022 Nu Vino Rosso (1L)

Gian Luca is an impassioned perfectionist. When we led a group of customers there in 2023, he was surviving on a few hours of sleep, as he and his family had been in the vineyards into the wee hours, picking leaf-eating bugs off the vines by hand so he didn't have to violate his organic ethic.

And this level of attention to detail pays off. His Barolo and Pinot Nero are world-class. But sell to those who breathe the rarified air that allows them to pay $75+ a bottle.

Well, this ain't that.

His barrels that don't quite make it into his high-end bottlings go into these1L bottles called 'Nu Vino Rosso'. And this wine is sealed with a crown cap for easy access and near-term enjoyment. And the best part? It sells for $27/Liter.

I'm no rocket scientist, but I DO know that $27 is a far cry from %75+ we'd all pay for his top wines. And that $27 for a Liter is the equivalent of only $20.25 per regular-sized bottle!

A small, family-owned property that is brand new by Old World standards, where some wineries have been in the family for 30+ generations. Gian Luca cut his winemaking teeth while making wine for some of Piemonte's top producers and went out on his own to pursue his dream of making Pinot Nero (whether you call it Pinot Noir, Spatburgunder or Pinot Nero "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet") in Piemonte.

It was way more than his dream, actually. More like his undying passion.

Gian Luca spent years studying the micro climates and soils of Piemonte until he found the ideal spot for this grape. Pinot Nero bears similar properties to the Nebbiolo grape behind the prestigious wines of Barolo and Barbaresco areas - they both have good acidity, light color, elegant aromatics and earthiness.
