The Wine
The charming town of Orvieto is known for its iconic Duomo di Orvieto (Photo) and its sometimes simple but zippy white wine. In recent years, the wine has benefitted from a renaissance of its primary grape - the Grechetto, whose quality has improved to the point that it is increasingly seen as a varietal bottling and is considered the flag bearer for Umbria's white wines.
This wine brings flavors of pear and apple with citrus accents that keep it refreshing. On the palate, look for the aromas to follow through with added complexity from a nice minerality and a clean finish. Pair this wine with salads, seafood, white meats, and vegetable dishes.
The Winery
Palazzone is nestled in the hills of Rocca Ripesena, just outside Orvieto. As with many Old World wineries, its history dates back for centuries, in this case, back to the 14th century when it was built as a hostel for religious pilgrims on their way to/from Rome. In 1969, the Dubini family acquired the property and began restoring its medieval architecture while planting vineyards across 25 hectares. But it wasn't until 1982 that restoration was sufficiently complete and the family could craft their first vintage. Returning the estate to its roots, sort of, they now offer an agri-tourismo experience through their boutique hotel, Locando Palazzone.
