Don't have a cellar of your own? No worries, here's a well-aged Cab from Portugal's Beiras wine country. Makes a nice gift, or a splurge to feed your own pleasure. A wine from the Clinton era, in the days before smart phones, tablets, electric vehicles and social media.

This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13% ABV

For over 30 years this wine has developed in the bottle and when opening this gem we advise using an Ah So instead of the traditional waiter's corkscrew - the cork is likely to crumble!

The Winery

Founded in 1920 by the Costa brothers, Caves São João became a key player in Portuguese winemaking with two iconic brands: one from Northern Portugal's Bairrada region, the other from the Dão, two regions known for wines of great complexity, finesse and ageability.

Though demand for Bairrada and Dão wines waned with the popularity of the big, extracted red wines of the 1990s, they saw a resurgence 20 years later as consumers sought finesse and freshness.

Poço do Lobo ages their wines in cement tanks. This lack of wood influence allows the grape and terroir to take center stage, while the tanks' slight porousness provides just the right amount of oxygen to keep the wine developing. After bottling, the wines ages for decades in their cool, underground cellars.

It wasn't until 2013, that the current gatekeepers (the Costa family) decided to release these historical gems to the public, releasing library vintages from 1959 to 2000. There is no better program in all of Portugal that showcases the remarkable aging potential of their wines. Caves São João is the only Portuguese winery to offer such historic vintages commercially, blending tradition with continuous innovation.
