The Wine
The wine opens with that unmistakable Raúl Pérez perfume featuring wild red berries, rose petals, and a cool, stony lift. As the wine is exposed to air, its mood deepens into darker tones of black raspberry, pomegranate, and fleeting hints of a smoked tea like Lapsang Souchong.
On the palate the wine is a blend of the ethereal and quietly powerful. Silky Mencía fruit glides across the palate with some fine, chalk‑dust tannins tagging along and carrying flavors of red currant, crushed herbs, and subtle hints of cured meat and forest floor. The finish is long, mineral-driven, and almost weightless, leaving a lingering impression of red fruit and granite. It’s a wine that feels alive, vibrant, soulful, and unmistakably Ribeira Sacra.
Pairings: Duck confit with cherry or pomegranate glaze. Charcoal‑grilled pork tenderloin with herbs, a wide array of mushroom dishes, and grilled octopus or sardines. For Cheese pairings, reach for semi‑firm cheeses like Mahón, aged goat cheeses, or lightly smoked varieties.
The Winery
Raúl Pérez is one of Spain’s most influential and intuitive winemakers, a figure whose touch has reshaped the modern understanding of Spain's Atlantic‑influenced reds.
Based in Bierzo, Raul works across northwestern Spain where he champions old vines, steep terraces, and minimal intervention winemaking. His wines are known for their haunting aromatics, lifted textures, and a sense of place that borders on the poetic.
El Pecado comes from a tiny, precipitous parcel in the Amandi subzone of Ribeira Sacra, where Mencía vines cling to slate terraces overlooking the river. Farming is by hand—there’s no other way—and yields are minuscule. In the cellar, Pérez works gently: whole clusters, native fermentations, and aging that prioritizes transparency over oak imprint.
The result is one of Spain’s most sought‑after expressions of Mencía, a wine that marries delicacy with depth and speaks fluently of its dramatic landscape.
