The Wine

Soil: Primary rock and Gneis

Elevation: 755 - 885 feet

Age of vines: 25 years

Vinification: Hand harvested in early October. The grapes are destemmed and allowed to macerate for four hours before fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The finished wine is then aged for 3 months on the lees in stainless steel tanks to add some softness to this very fresh wine.

Tasting Notes: Pale yellow in color. Aromas and flavors hinting at peach skins, a hint of gooseberry (think sour grapes, lemon juice and apples), followed by typical Riesling fruits such as peach and apricot. The acidity is very well integrated and pleasant, lending a freshness to the wine that will keep for a decade or more. ABV: 12.5% RS: 4.0 g/l Acidity: 6.0 g/l

The Winery

Located in Langenlois, Austria’s largest wine growing village, in the renowned Kamptal region, the Steininger family estate comprises an impressive 135 acres. The estate's current stewards are Karl & Brigitta Steininger.

Karl inherited the farm from his parents in 1980 when he was a young newlywed. He and Brigitta decided to focus on grape growing and Karl headed off to oenology school to enhance the knowledge passed down from his family and neighbors. The couple soon realized they could only survive by selling high-quality wines on the international market and upgraded their practices accordingly.

Karl’s chief lesson to his children is that good wine cannot be rushed. It must be given the time it needs to develop, mature and evolve. Their oldest daughter Eva and her husband Peter are the next generation of stewards, with Peter working with Karl in the winery and Eva taking over sales and marketing.
