The Wine
Many blush wines are made by bleeding off some of the juice from a red wine before it has had its full amount of time on the skins. This is a common practice called "Saignee" and it produces some nice wines. But they tend to be a bit flabby, to my way of thinking, as the grapes destined for a red wine are always picked weeks later than the ideal time for picking grapes destined for a rose!
This wine was intended to be a rose from the get-go, so the grapes were harvested early in August at just 19 Brix (tech speak for saying the sugars were low, resulting in a wine of refreshing crispness and low/moderate alcohol. Mouth-watering aromas of rose petals, red fruits (strawberry/raspberry) and fresh rain. Though the wine's freshness and high-toned fruit notes were amplified by its fermentation in steel tanks, its breadth developed through time spent in neutral oak barrels.
