Vina Progresso 2022 "Overground" Tannat, Uruguay
The Wine
The Tannat grape is aptly named, as it is one of the world's most tannic grapes, capable of producing monstrous wines that strip all the slipperiness from your saliva and demand pairing with fatty meats or cheeses. This ain't that. A surprisingly nimble red wine with red fruit notes on top of the typical black fruits and a delightful hint of warm earth. Still full-bodied, the tannins play a supporting role that is in harmony with the wine's juicy acidity.
The Winery
Viña Progreso is the project of Gabriel Pisano, one of Uruguay’s most exciting young winemakers. Working in Progreso, Canelones, he is known for wines that are bright, modern, and fruit‑driven, while still honoring the natural power of Tannat. They have become benchmarks for Uruguay’s “new wave wines" - bottlings that retain the grape's essential character but with a most welcome freshness and polish.
