The Wine
I bought this wine ages ago and have been impatiently storing it until a space was available in the wine club!
In the glass, this Grüner Veltliner shows a light greenish‑yellow color with silver reflections, a visual cue to its freshness. On the nose look for yellow apple, apricot and mango, and a subtle floral lift.
On the palate, the wine is juicy, elegant, and light on its feet, with a fruit‑forward profile that remains balanced by vibrant acidity. The texture is silky and smooth, carrying orchard and stone‑fruit notes through to a clean, mineral‑tinged close.
This is classic Kamptal Grüner—bright, expressive, and super food-versatile!
Falstaff: 93‑points.
Pairings: Classic pairings for G.V. are pork dishes, and one of my favorites are sweet sausages with grilled onions, Granny Smith apples and allspice, with the sausages steamed in a covered sauté pan using a small amount of the wine. But other pork dishes (roasted loin, schnitzel or herbed chops) also shine here. Cheese pairings include soft, fresh goat cheeses topped with honey or jam.
The Winery
Weingut Weixelbaum is a respected Kamptal producer who also produces the label 'In Vino Weix'. The winery farms a range of old‑vine sites, including Wechselberg, Rosengarten, and Koglberg, planted on a mosaic of loess, gneiss, schist, quartz, and marble, reflecting Kamptal’s dramatic geological diversity.
The estate follows organic practices, producing Grüner Veltliner and Riesling that emphasize clarity, fruit purity, and terroir expression. Falstaff consistently rates the winery highly, awarding the 2022 Alte Reben 93 points and praising its elegance and versatility at the table.
Weixelbaum has built a reputation for value‑driven, high‑quality Kamptal whites, with a style that balances ripe fruit, finesse, and drinkability.
