The Wine
A light, easygoing white that leans into freshness rather than weight. The wine is a blend of grapes from small, local growers waiting to achieve their Biodynamic certifications - a requirement they must meet for their grapes to be used in Lageder's other wines. The Alto Adige region is marked by small family plots that are not viable as a commercial label of their own, and it is common practice here for these families to sell their grapes to a large producer like Lageder.
But few (as in none) of these other producers have such a commitment to Biodynamics that all their growers are required to be fully certified! As a result, this wine is a blend of local grape varieties that produce enticing aromatics and a clean, saline finish.
Notes of citrus peel, white flowers, and a faint herbal edge, all carried on a bright, uncomplicated palate that is crisp without being sharp. There’s a subtle sea‑spray character that keeps the wine lively, and the fruit stays in the realm of lemon, pear, and a touch of green apple. What makes it work is its sense of calm balance: nothing pushes too hard, and the blend feels seamless, offering a relaxed, summery profile that’s meant for casual drinking. It’s the kind of bottle that fits naturally with simple food, warm weather, and the easy rhythm Lageder brings to their more playful wines.
The Winery
Located in the Alto Adige, just south of the Austrian border (when this land was part of Austria, up until the end of WWI, it was known as Sud Tyrol), Alois Lageder is one of the more memorable wineries I've visited. Not only are the mountains stunningly scenic, the areas history is on full display at every turn, an uncomfortable mix of cultures co-existing, with most public signage displayed in both German and the regional Italian dialect.
In this already memorable setting, a visit to Lageder shows them to be a thoughtful and quietly influential regional power, a family winery that has spent generations shaping a style built on clarity, precision, and an almost meditative respect for the land, its history and its wines.
Their winemaking style reflects the region’s alpine calm: bright, pure, and finely detailed, never forced, always centered on balance. What sets Lageder apart is the way tradition and experimentation coexist. The family has deep roots in Magrè, yet they’re constantly exploring new ideas, from biodynamics to mixed-variety plantings to collaborative projects that highlight the diversity of the region.
Sustainability isn’t a marketing angle for them; it’s a philosophy that touches everything, from vineyard biodiversity to energy use to the gentle, low‑intervention approach in their cellar. The result is a portfolio that ranges from crisp, mineral‑driven classics to more playful, expressive blends, all sharing the same quiet confidence. Visiting or tasting through their wines gives the sense of a place where nature sets the rhythm and the winery simply listens, channeling Alto Adige’s light, air, and landscape into their wines.
