The Wine
A dry white wine from Germany's Pfalz region, produced by the family-owned Borell-Diehl estate. Made entirely from Müller-Thurgau, the wine is crafted in a classic Pfalz style that emphasizes freshness, purity of fruit and easy drinkability.
Fun FactMüller-Thurgau is one of the world's most approachable white grape varieties, prized for its aromatic charm, gentle acidity, and easy-drinking character. Originally developed in the late 19th century by Swiss botanist Hermann Müller from the canton of Thurgau, it is widely planted in Germany, Austria, Northern Italy (especially Alto Adige), and parts of Central Europe.
Aromas of green apple, pear, white peach and elderflower, followed by subtle citrus blossom and delicate herbal notes. On the palate, it is light-bodied and crisp, with moderate acidity supporting flavors of orchard fruit, lemon zest, melon and lime. A faint floral and mineral character adds dimension without overwhelming the wine's straightforward, refreshing style.
Pairings: Freshwater fish, sushi, roast chicken, pork schnitzel, asparagus, herb-based dishes, salads, alpine cheeses and light vegetable preparations. Its gentle acidity and aromatic freshness make it an especially good partner for delicate flavors.
The Winery
Borell-Diehl is one of those old wold wineries inhabiting one of those centuries-old buildings that seems as if it would be haunted were not for the winery that breathes life into it. And as with so many old world wineries, Borrell-Diel has successfully handed the reins over to a new generation - George Diehl (see photos).
Following the European model for successful inter-generational succession, George gained his winemaking chops under a diverse set of global tutors - institutions like Von Volxem and Wittmann as well as an apprenticeship in New Zealand.
