Caffarel has made chocolate in Turin since 1826, adding to the fame of Piedmontese hazelnuts. Its historical milestone came in 1865 with the creation of Gianduia, blending scarce cocoa with local hazelnuts and establishing the region’s signature chocolate, named for a popular character in the regional puppet theaters (yes, it's a thing).
The puppet character 'Gianduja' emerged in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He portrayed the jovial, honest symbol of the Piedmontese everyman, recognizable by his tricorn hat and rustic attire. His popularity in Turin’s carnival culture made him a regional icon, and his name later passed to the chocolate that would define Piedmont’s identity.
Caffarei's Nocciolotta is directly descended from that historic chocolate lineage.
