Grape Expectations
The Wine
A classic expression of Priorat's famous Llicorella soils, which make harvesting these low-yielding vineyards like climbing a hill of china saucers!
"Flush with hedonistic youth. Red plums, morello cherries, violets and aromatic herbs sizzle over the nose and plunge headfirst into the plush, pillowy palate. Underscoring acidity flows alongside a bright hibiscus energy to endorse the finish. 97 points." - Decanter (WWA) 6/26
The Winery
Any wine tourist to the small Priorat village of Poboleda knows of the beat-up green door that sits between Sandra Doix's winery and the local watering hole. Those lucky enough to have passed through this green door have seen the rustic labyrinth of tanks, stairs, crumbling rock, amphorae, foudres, and barrels that is Cellers Unio Priorat Poboleda, one of the highest-performing cooperatives in the wine world and has been the unsung hero behind many sought-after wines of Priorat.

Ever since the 1990s, Priorat wines have been built to please the prevailing critics of the day, who blessed the region with high scores (95-100) for wines that saw way too much wood, were made in a highly reductive style, released too early, and were way too pricey!
This ain't that.
Pere Mateo and his team have created this gem behind the cooperatives green door, using a mix of concrete and steel (NO WOOD!), using grapes from two vineyards in Poboleda, one with 50-year-old vines and one with 80-year-old vines, both on black slate, with a resulting 50/50 Garnacha/Carignan (field blend) varietal mix.
Some call it the ultimate transparent translation of the terroir that makes Poboleda one of Priorat's most appealing subdistricts.
