The Wine

Like art, fashion and food, a wine's popularity is subject to public perception. And right now, the softer wines of the Right Bank of Bordeaux seem to be winning the popularity contest. And the wines must be feeling chuffed, given most of the First Growths are found on the Left Bank!

This wine is a fine example of Right Bank Bordeaus - it is a plush, violet‑scented Pomerol showing ripe plum, black cherry, cocoa powder, and the polished tannins typical of the plateau’s clay‑rich soils. The warm, generous 2019 vintage gave Bonalgue extra mid‑palate weight while preserving freshness thanks to cool nights late in the season.

Following the classic blend here, the wine is dominated by Merlot with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel‑and‑clay parcels just west of Libourne.

Pairings: Beef en croute, prime rib, pork loin, or duck confit with lentils. In the cheese department, reach for a creamy, earthy cheese such as Brillat‑Savarin.

The Winery

Château Bonalgue is part of the Bourotte family’s long‑established Right Bank holdings, a group of small, quality‑focused estates centered around Libourne. The property sits on classic Pomerol gravel‑and‑clay soils that favor Merlot’s plush texture and aromatic depth.

Over the past two decades, the family has invested heavily in vineyard renewal, parcel‑by‑parcel farming, and gentler extraction in the cellar, resulting in wines that balance richness with polish. Bonalgue’s style leans toward supple tannins, dark‑fruited generosity, and a quietly elegant expression of Pomerol rather than overt power.
