The Pomerol area in Bordeaux dates back to around 3,000 BCE when the Celts set up camp there.  But winegrowing didn't occur until about 20 AD when grapes suited to the climate were first discovered.

During the Middle Ages, the Knights Hospitaller settled in Lalande de Pomerol. These were some very thirsty knights, apparently, as winegrowing flourished during this period of history. But at the end of the Hundred Years' War (~1453) the region was infested by the phylloxera louse, ending winegrowing production and leading to many, many decades of reliance on wines from afar.

In 1783, the Tournefeuille vineyard began a renaissance that continues to this day.  If you could stand in this vineyard, you'd enjoy a remarkable view of its iconic (and VERY expensive) neighbor - Petrus.

Looking for a bottle that expresses the famed Pomerol character without spending a couple of thousand dollars for a bottle?  This wine is your ticket to such exquisite wonder.

Tasting Notes: 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc from 30-year-old vines.  Full-bodied with ripe tannins and flavors of black raspberry, cherry, black plum, dark chocolate, earth and subtle spice.

Pairs well with hearty mushroom dishes, beef, duck, lamb, pizza, red sauce dishes and Prima Donna Gouda.

A classic!
