The Wine

The Winery

The latest incarnation of Château Grange Cochard is the project of Jean-Philippe Manches, who breathed new life into the Chateau when his stewardship began in 2018.

Upon assuming control, Jean-Philippe instigated a significant departure from a house style known for heavy extraction and an emphasis on new oak barrels. The new path leads to a more neutral approach, a more refined and balanced style. Jean-Philippe is also pursuing greater sustainability in the vineyards, including a transition to organic viticulture in 2021, with certification attained in 2023. They are also flirting with some biodynamic practices such as the spraying of orange oil for mildew prevention and limiting plowing to once or twice per year.

In the cellar, the grapes are hand sorted and 50% to 100% of the bunches (depending on the vintage characteristics) are kept as whole clusters - a defining technique of the Beaujolais region. Following a cool, two- or three-week fermentation using natural yeasts, the wines age in a combination of tall, neutral foudres, used barrels and concrete vats.

The resultant wines are ethereal and sculptural, with the fruits of the labor in the vineyards manifesting themselves vividly in the wines.
