The Wine

Colombaio di Santa Chiara’s 2024 Vernaccia di San Gimignano “Selvabianca” is a vibrant, terroir-driven white wine showing delightful citrus, herbal, and mineral complexity. Over the recent past, this producer has established itself as a benchmark for elegant, expressive Tuscan whites. Simply delicious.

The Vernaccia di San Gimignano white wine grape is unique to this very small production zone (San Gimignano, one of Italy's first DOCs) and is one of the 500+ Italian wine grapes you'll find only when in that area. Just one of the many charms of the Italian wine scene. 

The Winery

Any photo you'll ever see of San Gimignano features the city's famed tours. The towers were built between the 11th and 14th centuries as symbols of wealth and power by rival aristocratic families. When two aristocratic families were joined in marriage, a bridge was built between their towers. The only real use for these tall, narrow towers, which added little livable space to the family's home, was to achieve prestige among their neighbors. Once numbering over 70, only 13–14 of the towers remain today. That's a lot of lost status symbols!
