The Wine
The Bastardo grape (also known as Trousseau) is a rarity in the Douro, producing a pale, aromatic red with strawberry, rose petal, and a whisper of spice. This wine is perfectly suited to today's thirst for lower alcohol, lighter-bodied reds.
The 2022 vintage is delicate and fresh, shaped by high‑altitude granite soils that keep tannins feather‑light. It’s a wine that behaves more like Jura (home to Trousseau) than Douro, and that’s precisely its charm.
Pairings: Charcuterie, roast chicken, alpine cheeses, and simple pasta dishes all highlight its subtlety.
The Winery
Conceito’s commitment to biodiversity and careful farming allows them to coax elegance from varieties not typically associated with the Douro. Their Bastardo is a cult favorite, showcasing the region’s potential for finesse when grown in cooler, elevated sites. And the label? Only your imagination knows.
