The Wine
A bright, approachable Rioja Alta red made primarily from Tempranillo with small portions of Garnacha and Mazuelo . The wine is fermented in stainless steel at controlled temperatures to preserve its high-toned aromatics, then aged for twelve months in used American oak barrels, which lend gentle sweetness and spice without overwhelming the fruit with overt notes of fresh-cut lumber.
The color is bright garnet, and the aromatics show red fruit, cherry, and licorice, balanced by subtle oak nuances from its year in barrel. The palate is smooth and medium‑bodied, offering fresh red fruit, soft tannins, and a lingering, fruit‑driven finish that makes the wine easy to drink and versatile at the table.
Pairings: Roasted poultry, grilled meats, lamb dishes, tomato‑based pastas, and a wide range of Mediterranean foods. Cheese-wise, pair with aged Manchego, Idiazabel, Mahon or Roncal. Lovers of cow's milk cheeses will enjoy this wine with an aged Gouda or cloth-bound cheddar.
The Winery
CUNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) moved from CVNE to CUNE due to a typo in their early marketing materials back when they were founded in 1879. Go figure.
They're located in Haro’s historic Barrio de la Estación, where Rioja Alta’s oldest wineries clustered around the rail line to Bilbao - it was the railroad that enabled the region's fame.
The Crianza bottling traces its origins to the estate’s earliest wines, once labeled “Tercer Año,” reflecting the required 3-yr aging period (2 in barrel and one in bottle) for a Crianza.
Today, CUNE remains one of Rioja’s most recognizable producers, blending fruit from estate vineyards in Haro and long‑standing partner growers across Rioja Alta to achieve a consistent house style year after year.
