Domaine Clusel-Roch 2022 Rouge Serine
The Wine
In our view, Rouge Serine is a beautifully crafted wine that showcases Northern Rhône Syrah. The wine is clearly "Syrah", from the first whiff as the wine is poured to the long and lingering finish. Look for a red wine with a dark edge, and rich aromas of blackberries, and subtle spice notes like black pepper and cinnamon - all supported by hints of barnyard leather. On the palate, it is full-bodied with firm tannins and generous acidity, revealing layers of tobacco and leather, culminating in a long, impressive finish.
At this family winery, their goal is to produce wine that expresses their terroir - wines that showcase nature over ego. Indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation, some of which involve partial whole-cluster fermentation, depending on the wine. Their wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a restrained use of new oak (10–30%), for up to 24 months. This method produces wines that are elegant, balanced, and reflective of their origin.
The Winery
Domaine Clusel-Roche (CluzEL-Roke) is located in the Southeast of France (see map) near Ampuis. Now in their 4th generation of family ownership, they come to be as well known for their pricey Condrieu as their larger production runs like the Serine. Over the years each new generation has been pased the baton of the family philosophy - emphasizing organic farming, traditional winemaking, and a deep respect for their various terroirs.
The vineyards, primarily situated on the steep slopes of the Côte Brune, are cultivated manually due to the challenging terrain. The soils, rich in mica schist, contribute to the distinct minerality and complexity of their wines.
