Enrico Serafino 2020 Oudeis', Metodo Classico Brut, Alta Langa DOCG
The sparkling wines from Alta Langa (upper Langa, not as in NORTH, but as in ALTITUDE) are a well-kept secret, but IYKYK (If You Know, You Know). Crafted in the Champagne style, with the secondary fermentation occurring over many months, in the very same bottle you buy, the wine also leverages the two most common in Champagne - Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The region is known for its caves, chock full of sleeping sparkling wine bottles maturing until it's time for their debut - for an impressive minimum of 30 months. The caves, known here as underground cathedrals (love that!), Alta Langa wines always have a vintage date on every label.
This particular producer derives the name for this wine from the Greek "Odysseus", meaning "no one" - a reference to the winery's belief that no one can impact the complexity of the wine, only the terroir can do that.
Tasting Notes: The wine begins to make its impression as soon as it's poured - a beautiful straw-yellow with golden hues and a fine and persistent “perlage”. It goes on to display attractive aromas of delicate yellow flowers, white-fleshed fruit and fresh-baked bread crusts all supported by a foundation of minerality. On the palate this is a complex wine, as one expects after 30 months+ of lees contact prior to being disgorged. The wine is dry but with notes of fresh citrus and a rich texture and a long mineral finish.
