Grape Expectations
The Wine
Tasting Notes: Medium-bodied, with flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cracked pepper, and dried herbs. Bright acidity and fine tannins carry through to a distinctly mineral finish. If you enjoy Loire Cabernet Franc, cooler-climate Syrah, or Cru Beaujolais, this Austrian Blaufränkisch offers a similarly fresh, food-friendly profile.
Pairings: Roast pork, grilled sausages, duck breast, mushroom dishes, hearty pasta preparations, and aged alpine cheeses. Esterházy specifically recommends it with roasted meats, savory pasta dishes, and hard cheeses.
The Winery
The Esterházy estate is one of Austria's most historically significant wineries, combining centuries of aristocratic heritage with a decidedly modern winemaking philosophy. The winery takes its name from the powerful House of Esterházy, one of Central Europe's great noble families.
While much of Burgenland is known for richer, warmer-climate reds, Leithaberg enjoys more moderate temperatures and their unique soils impart a distinctly mineral character to the wines. Esterhzy has become a leading ambassador for this region, producing wines that emphasize freshness and site expression rather than power.
The estate farms organically and emphasizes soil health, cover crops between vineyard rows, compost use, and the avoidance of irrigation in the vineyards. These practices are intended to encourage deep root systems and to amplify the expression of the limestone soils.
Fun Fact
The Esterházy family were major patrons of the composer Joseph Haydn, who served the family for decades.
