Lucidity Wine Merchants
The Wine
A traditional expression of Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte, produced exclusively from Nebbiolo (locally known as Spanna), in the historic commune of Gattinara. The vineyards are planted on ancient volcanic soils rich in porphyry, granite and iron-bearing minerals, a terroir that gives Gattinara its distinctive combination of structure, minerality and elegance.
Fermentation is carried out with extended maceration, followed by maturation in large neutral casks in keeping with longstanding local tradition. The estate's approach has remained largely unchanged since its first commercial release in 1967, emphasizing authenticity and longevity over modern winemaking trends.
Aromas are complex and classically Nebbiolo - wild red berries, dried rose petals, rhubarb, forest floor and subtle spice, underpinned by an unmistakable volcanic minerality.
On the palate, the wine is energetic and tightly wound, combining vibrant acidity with firm yet refined tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, cranberry, citrus peel and savory herbs are supported by enticing notes of leather, dried flowers and crushed stone. The finish is long, structured and persistent, carrying a tension and freshness that are hallmarks of great Gattinara. Approachable now with sufficient decanting, the wine can easily reward further cellaring for another 6-7 years.
Pairings: Risotto with porcini mushrooms, braised beef, game birds, osso buco, aged alpine cheeses, truffle dishes, or traditional Piedmontese salumi. Its acidity and tannic structure make it particularly effective alongside rich, slow-cooked dishes.
The Producer
Azienda Franchino was founded in 1940 in the heart of Gattinara by Marco Franchino. Originally a mixed agricultural farm with livestock and cultivated fields, the estate gradually focused its efforts on vineyard cultivation and estate winemaking. Today, it remains a small family-run producer dedicated to preserving the traditions and identity of one of Piedmont's most historic appellations.
The estate farms Nebbiolo vineyards in some of Gattinara's traditional growing areas, where volcanic soils and Alpine influences combine to produce wines of remarkable character and longevity. His resulting wines are firmly rooted in the classic style of Alto Piemonte: austere in youth, elegant with maturity, and deeply expressive of their volcanic origins.
