A: One of the most talked-about wine regions of the past decade, Friuli/Brda are at the epicenter of several major consumer trends: distinctive white wines, indigenous grapes, food-friendly styles, and the rise of orange wine.
These regions produce some of Italy's most serious white wines. The hills of Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli (literally, the Eastern hills of Friuli) produce complex, mineral-driven whites - perfectly in line with today's growing interest in white wines. The famous ponca soil, the mix of marl and sandstone behind Friuli's white wine quality, continues uninterrupted across the border into Slovenia.
Orange wine put Friuli on the map for a new generation of drinkers. A few years ago, as American wine lovers were re-discovering the unique appeal of white wines left in contact with their skins, Friulian producers such as Gravner and Radikon were leaders of the movement. Their wines helped create global interest in what is now marketed as "orange wine," and many wine enthusiasts discovered Friuli through those wines.
Indigenous varieties offer something different. As interest grows beyond the traditional white varietals, Friuli answers the call with grapes like Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Verduzzo, Schioppettino, and Refosco. Many wine lovers are surprised to learn that Friuli is the source of some of Italy's top Pinot Grigio!
The region offers quaint authenticity. Friuli is less commercialized than many of Italy's wine regions. The border culture, Austrian and Slovenian influences, family-owned estates, and emphasis on terroir appeal to today's wine enthusiasts looking for authenticity and craftsmanship.
