The Amaro

Though many liquor enthusiasts will naturally assume an "Americano" refers to the nation and its people/customs. Not so, here.

The word ‘americano’ comes from the French ‘amer’ which means bitter and as with all aperitvi, is meant to whet the palate. This Americano Bianco is made from a base wine of Trebbiano di Lugana (genetically identical to Verdicchio) and shows the variety’s distinctive freshness on the palate. Balanced between citrus, white flowers and the bitterness of the gentian, the finish also shows musk melon and woodsy spice.

Produciton Notes: The botanicals were infused individually in a neutral grain spirit for 3 weeks with daily stirring. These infusions were then pressed and blended, then water and beet sugar added. Rested briefly and paperf iltered. No coloring added; vegan.

Crafted as an aperitivo, we recommend using this in a White Negroni, Corpse Reviver #2, or on ice with orange and an optional splash of Prosecco. Delish!

The Producer

Alisa Carta is the mind behind this delicious and beguiling amaro. Alisa is a sommelier and certified olive oil taster as well as a madly pssionate botanist - a useful skill when growing and evaluating the herbs, flowers, roots and fruits for creating the flavors of your amaro. A boutique amaro like this one can use anywhere from a handful of flavoring ingredients to over 30. As a curator of this Italian tradition, Alisa is a national gem, having studied and foraged for herbs as a child, guided by her grandmother. Since then she has conducted a long and detailed study of Italian liqueurs and their recipes.

The old fables of mermaids luring sailors onto the rocks with their irresistable siren song could have been written about her breath-takinglocation on Lake Garda, called the Bay of Sirens (Baia de la Sirene).

The Legend

The story begins on a hot summer's night in a small bay where some fishermen had taken refuge from the lake's choppy waves.  All of a sudden some mermaids appeared. They were, of course, beautiful and tempting, but this legend takes a detour from the expected desitnation - they offered the sailors a drink that would give them the energy and desire to go straight back home to their wives.

Since that day, the mermaids go back with the magic liqueur to that very same bay. Or so the story goes, I've yet to see them! The sailors called it the The Liquore delle Sirene.  Their wives have nicknamed it the l'Elisir d'Amore - the elixer of love.
