The Wine

This wine hails from Lake County, a California appellation moving from the wings and onto center stage. And once you taste this wine, you'll see why that promotion is well desserved.

Lake county offers high‑altitude vineyards planted to the region's volcanic soils, resulting in a complex, lighter-bodied Zinfandel offering red cherry, raspberry, and volcanic spice, lifted by natural acidity from the cool nights of Lake County. The 2022 vintage delivered small berries and intense aromatics due to the region’s dry, warm summer.

The wine is 100% Zinfandel from Devil’s Kitchen, a volcanic‑ash and basalt site at elevation — known for producing structured, mineral‑driven fruit.

Pairings: Smoked ribs or grilled vegetables and lighter grilled foods such as trout, salmon or poultry. Cheese-wise, this wine is highly versatile, pairing well with cheeses that are savory, tangy or a little creamy - sure bets include Humboldt Fog, fressh goat cheeses, Reblochon, Alpine cheeses and mild blues.

The Winery

Martin Pohl focuses on micro‑lot, single‑vineyard wines from Lake County’s extreme volcanic sites. His approach is minimal intervention, native fermentations, and a strong belief that high‑elevation Zinfandel can show finesse and tension. The “Volcano” series highlights the region’s dramatic soils and cooling mountain winds. Martin offers us proof that Zinfandel can be alluring as a light-bodied, low-alcohol wine!
