The Wine
This old wine exhibits all the allure of a classic, long‑aged Rioja built primarily from Tempranillo with a small portion of Garnacha.
In researching the production details of such an old wine, we learned from CellarTracker that the wine spent one year in large wooden vats to finish fermentation and rest before moving to barrels for further aging - some sources indicate the wine spent five or more years in barrel followed by a decade of bottle aging before release - and of course, another few decades of bottle aging in the winery cellar until its 2026 sale to our importer.
Now fully mature, the wine shows pale garnet color with amber and brick‑orange tones at the rim, reflecting its long evolution . Aromas include dried cherry, redcurrant, plum skin, leather, tobacco, old wood, vanilla, coconut, forest floor, dried herbs, and subtle spice . The palate is silky, offering dried red fruits, tea leaf, savory spice, gentle oak sweetness, and fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its age .
Pairings: Mature Rioja pairs well with roast lamb, pork, grilled chicken, mushroom dishes, classic Spanish stews, and aged Manchego or other semi‑hard cheeses.
The Winery
Bodegas Palacio is a historic Rioja producer known for traditional methods, long aging, and careful selection of fruit from vineyards around Laguardia . The 1964 Cosecha Especial comes from one of Rioja’s legendary vintages and reflects the estate’s classic approach: fermentation in large vats, extended time in American oak, and patient bottle aging before release
