The Wine

This is one of the most distinctive reds we've tasted from the Adige Valley! The ancient, almost extinct, thick‑skinned Enantio grape is an indigenous variety that thrives on the region’s steep, stony terraces and resists disease naturally. The variety became virtually extinct due the phylloxera epidemic in the last half of the 19th century, but the vineyards on the banks of the Adige river were spared because the little buggers can't live in the microscopically sharp, shard-like, sandy soils that form the banks of the Adige river.

The wine has a deep, vivid ruby color with a slightly wild aromatic profile: black cherry, red currant, alpine herbs, juniper, and a subtle resinous note that feels both rustic and refined. There’s a faint peppery edge and a cool, forest‑driven character that marks true Enantio.

On the palate, the wine is medium‑bodied but structured, with bright acidity, firm tannins, and a mineral finish. Flavors of dark berry, plum skin, dried herbs, and a touch of balsam carry through to a long, savory finish. It’s a wine of clarity and personality—vivid, energetic, and unmistakably tied to its mountain origins.

Pairings: Grilled sausages, roasted pork, mushroom dishes, and hearty Alpine fare. For cheeses, it pairs beautifully with aged Asiago, Fontina Val d’Aosta, and nutty Alpine tommes.

The Winery

Roeno is a family estate founded by Rolando Fugatti and now run by the Fugatti family’s current generation. For generations, they provided a welcome waypoint for those travelling the Adige river, their Inn and restaurant being well known. Their foray into winegrowing began over a century ago to provide wines on tap at the family restaurant. Today, the  winery has outpaced the revenues from the hospitality center, which still remains popular among locals and tourists alike. It's one of those places where growers and producers gather regularly to discuss the vicissitudes of their chosen craft!

The estate vineyards are in the narrow Terradeiforti zone between Trentino and Veneto. The area is defined by steep terraces, glacial moraine soils, and a unique microclimate shaped by the Adige River corridor. Roeno has long championed native varieties—especially Enantio—preserving old vines and cultivating the grape’s natural resistance and expressive potential.

Farming is careful and sustainable, with an emphasis on maintaining biodiversity and respecting the rugged terrain. In the cellar, the approach is restrained: gentle fermentations, modest extraction, and aging that favors purity over embellishment. The goal is transparency—wines that speak clearly of the valley’s history, its dramatic landscape, and the Fugatti family’s commitment to preserving one of Italy’s rarest and most characterful grapes.
