We got such an exceptional price on this wine that we're sharing it with our wine club members at a huge discount to market! Even non-subscribers will enjoy some of the discount, though quantities are limited and I anticipate subscribers will gobble up what's left after they pop the cork on their allocation. This is definitely a case where the early corkscrew gets the wine, if you'll allow me to totally butcher a perfectly good, age-old analogy.
Jinsei (the Japanese word for "Life") is the flagship Pinot Noir for Tobias Glen. Though the typical Russian River Pinot is known for being big and burley, this one is on the lighter side, showing notes of rose petals and strawberries in addition to the more typical black cherry, cranberries, a bit of woodsmoke and Earl Grey tea. Accompanying the leading aromas are expressive notes of tobacco and graphite. There's a lot of complexity here in this delicious wine, despite its (TBH) rather plain and unimaginative label!
The wine earned 94 points from the Wine Advocate, which hasn't seen the same points inflation that others have over the past few years. At its peak now through 2027.
Winemaker, Stephane Vivier (see image), brings his Burgundian aesthetic to all the wines he crafts, which include some famous projects for Hyde de Villaine and Long Meadow Ranch among others. Tobias Glen follows holistic agriculture practices such as using well-placed bee colonies to pollinate cover crops, which maintain soil health and reduce soil evaportation.
