The Wine
Taut and slate‑driven with lime zest, green apple, white flowers, and a firm mineral backbone. The 2018 vintage adds subtle ripeness without losing precision.
The fruit comes from steep Rheingau slopes composed of slate, quartzite, and loess, which give the wine its tension and mineral cut. 2018 was a warm vintage, but cool nights preserved acidity. Fermentation is done in stainless steel with extended lees contact to build texture while maintaining a dry, linear profile.
Pairings: Sushi, Thai dishes, roast pork; cheeses like young Gouda, Alpine styles, or washed‑rind cheeses needing acidity.
The Winery
Ever since members of the Greiffenclau family sold wine to the St. Viktor monastery in Mainz for the first time in 1211, the cultivation of Riesling in the vineyards of Schloss Vollrads has developed steadily. 800 years later, they celebrated their anniversary as one of the oldest wineries in Germany still producing wine today.
As is not uncommon for a winery that has survived for eight centuries, their commitment to sustainability is the leading element of their strategy. This commitment extends beyond their vineyards to all aspects of their wine production and distribution, and is evidenced by their organic certification, their Fair Trade certification with Fair Choice, and their ECOSTEP certification.
